From the book: American Empire 2010
Didn't get to go to the employment office today, got a tire that won't hold air and without disassembling the entire wheel, is hell to get any air in. According to the dot number, it was manufactured in 1995!
I didn't want to chance the old Grand-Am with the bad engine mounts the 20+ miles to the employment center. Still, I had scavenged a little over a dollar in pennies and I needed to get Spike and I something to eat. So I drove it to the dollar store and found a cheap can of chili on clearance sale. I hoped it was fitting to eat!
I also found some old stale crackers I mixed in w/ Spike's food and some spoiled potato soup my sister had given me. Spike had more and ate better than I did that night!
After dinner I packed up my dishes in three medium sized bins and loaded them in the car. The hot water heater had quit again a couple of days after Dad and I fixed it in the old store building. So the only hot water on the property was up at my Mom and Dad's decrepit old trailer where they stayed whenever they were in town. It wasn't any fun toting all the dishes in the cold misting rain up to the trailer to wash, but to clean them it was the only choice........
