In response to article http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/23/technology/tripping-down-a-virtual-rabbit-hole.html?_r=0
Virtual Reality devices, as well as the underlying programming, are way too young to be what they will become, of course. Truth is, most cannot even visualize what is to be. Both the Virtual Self and Biological Machines (biomachina) of the future will rely heavily upon virtual reality, virtual devices and the extended programming opportunities even a connected virtual environment will allow. The introduction of true holographic environments for interactions offers many decades of technological advances, and for the future, that means new skills, jobs and a far different society than we know today.
So while today we are saddled with clunky devices, regardless of how sleek, and a somewhat disappointing array of applications, of course we're at the very beginning. Imagine when you'll be able to have Memory through virtual reality, achieved by audio/video/sensual inclusions of everyday activities, mundane or special. To be able to recall history, yours and others lives, literally, through holographic virtual reality will not only be mind blowing, but will open the gateway to perpetual machines. And that, is a whole different world.
It was good article, and I don't work in or interact with the "industry". I do however know something about life, and when the virtual reality devices move beyond gaming, sensations and "experiences" into, remember these two phrases, underpinning virtual entities (a type of coming AI) where you can become a Virtual Self, combined with the structure of an interactive, programmable biological machine, human kind goes to another level.
Give it a few decades. 100 years will see a transformed species, environment, and introduction of new dimensions. We'll be a different type of entity. Question is, will we make it till then, and will government, laws, and the human mind, be able to appear on time?
As a member of The World Council, I can guarantee you, someone is paying close attention.
