THE CRAWDADDIES - SPICE IT UP

The boys set the party off with a floor stompin' "Last Train To Clarkston", a diaster waiting to happen if there ever was one for the lead off song on an album, but The Cradaddies pull it off well, which gives one hope for the rest of the album. While there are shining moments (Betty Says, The Difference) and mucho rhythm, bass, and funked zydeco, I could also crave guitar or some mouth harp solos. It's almost too johnny-on-tha-spot. But that probably pays too, so best to have plenty of roast and grog to PARTY HARDY WITH THE CRAWDADDIES....this is bayou via Baltimore...OK, now I get it. MAP TO PARTY
WHEREWITHAL - 3 SONG EP

Strong indie pop out of the UK with a touch of art school punk thrown in for reference. The most recognizable figure in the band is the definitive audio imprint of Stacy Hart's vocals and delivery. The music is no slouch though, with plenty of hook and variation of melody. The band is good at not repeating themselves, every song stands on it's own. If you can get ahold of this band's 7" vinyl with hand painted sleeves, I'd advise it. A colletible of the UK indie rock scene. KENNETH L. KING - KENNETH L. KING

Thoroughbred American, touching on a diverse talent of roots-style blending. Some of his stuff reminds me of vintage Marshall Tucker Band, with alot of both western and appalachin flavors. KLK presents his talents in straight clean productions, allowing for the strengths of his songwriting to show and not be covered with gloss and compression. He shows great insight and more than a touch of sarcastic humor (The Next Time I See You On The Moon). I can also hear alot of Waylon Jennings influence, with it's slight tejano accents. On "Dark Cloud" King comes close to perfection with a sinister voodoo groove lurking behind the delta blues. Kenneth's skills are strongest in the conglomerates, but never underestimate his country. Throughout his catalog his radio friendly music rarely fails to make an acceptable grade. ALL HEROES - BITE THE BULLET

Cut above average emocore tinged hardcore. There's enough sloppy punk moments for the boys not to lose the faith, from the go you have dual vocals, strong melodic lines and progressive breaks. Yeah, it's more original than 99.9 percent of melodic facing fodder in the hopper, though it definitely has it's Bad Religion moments; so not so traditional as to be overly exceptional. Lyrics and vocal phrasing, how the signing is fit into the twisting and turning morass of guitar madness wrought by Ahmadi and Ageno, shows some tight family valued relations. This adds to the progressive edge allowing for on-the-spot injection. Metal guitar shows up often early also, which is another plus for punk flavored bands wanting some diversification. Where they boys break though, is when too much emotion and sappy invade the landscape. Though once again, the lyrics prowess comes through on the potentially beautiful "It Crumbles Away". Real songwriting. Stay tuned. Contact: Kevin Ahmadi, 5023-a Clayton Rd. Concord, Ca 94521. http://allheroesmusic.com kevin@allheroesmusic.com

FREE HERB & WILDFLOWER SEEDS

Free herbal wildflower seeds from the Herb Gardens Of New Jerusalem. All I ask is for a self addressed, stamped standard letter envelope. These seeds can be planted in the fall or spring when temperatures are between 60 and 85, and there is no chance of frost for at least a month. If planted in the fall, some plants will not appear until the following spring. Directions for bed: choose partial to full sun location that drains well. Loom your soil with a good mixture of manure (horse or cow) and if your soil is not too good to begin with, perhaps add a mixture of potting soil and peat moss in also. Dampen very good. Sow seeds and lightly rake in or sprinkle on additional soil. Keep well watered and in about a month your seeds should begin to sprout. After plants have gotten up well enough to differentiate (see the different varieties), you may thin or transplant. All these plants will bear their own seeds, and all are medicinal.

To get your free seeds, send a self addressed, stamped envelop (affix minimum of $1 postage for inside US locations, $3 for outside US) to:

Todd West
6422 Hwy 140 NW
Adairsville, GA 30103

Your return envelope will contain a mixture of the following seeds (hundreds of mixed seeds per envelope per volume):

Chamomile
Raven's Mint (sacred)
Smooth Red Sumac (sacred)
Wild Garlic
Yellow Coneflower (tatanka)(sacred)
Feverfew
Sunflower
Poppies (mexican variated)
Foxglove (digitalis)
Passion Flower (maypop)(sacred)
Moonwort (money plant)
Butterflyweed

I will also trade seeds. If you have some you think I might not have already, get in touch. If you cannot grow your own garden, See my blog post about having your own garden space at New Jerusalem. I also have the bulk herbs, teas and tonics themselves if you are interested.

Would you like your own dedicated garden space at New Jerusalem?

I'll be opening up space in the Herb Gardens Of New Jerusalem for individuals who would like to have their own plot. The size of the areas will be 10x10 foot each, and the majority will be in full sun all day long. Here's how it works: I lay out a ten foot by ten foot square area that is yours. I will plant stuff there that you donate, either by seed or actual growing plant. If you want me to put stuff in there, let me know what and if it will grow in Georgia I will try to get it. If you just don't know, here is a short list of what I have growing that will probably do well in full sun in your garden space: Rosemary, Red Sumac, Elderberry, Southern Mimosa and Thorny Mimosa, Fennel, Lamb's Ear, Dandelion, Common Plantains, Passion Flower (Maypop), Wild Rose, Catalily, Wormwood, German Chamomile, Feverfew, Raven's Mint, Golden Yam (sweet potato) and Muskidime (including red and white varieties). This list could grow, and you can pick up to nine of the above herbs for your plot, in addition to anything you'd like to contribute. Fruit bearing trees and shrubs and vegetables are welcomed.

If you have seeds, please check to make sure it is a plant that will live in North Georgia and especially one that will do well in hot full sun. I cannot guarantee that seeds you send me will sprout, grow and thrive, but we'll try our best! Please, do NOT send me seeds of illegal plants. Even though The Word does allow all plants to be grown for the benefit of humankind, including varieties of hemp, our insidious laws here in the land of the free don't. So no weed seeds, please! I also cannot allow vines such as Blackberry and Wisteria that go far distances under or above ground, as they are impossible to keep in one area without alot of digging up new sprouts and roots, and if it goes into other plots, that's not cool.

Once your plot has been planted, I will keep it weeded, watered and taken care of. I will post pictures online of it for you and you will be welcomed to come and work in it yourself as well as harvest the herbs and other plants from it. I cannot harvest the herbs and ship them to you myself, I cannot afford that. Each lot will be laid out with natural cut wood logs or rocks as a border.

I'd love to do this for free, but not only would I run out of space quickly, I simply cannot take the time to do this for you at my leisure. I already have a full schedule as is, and that's putting it lightly. I'd like to do this though, I've been enlightened to in fact, so I feel the following is more than reasonable:

$20 to lay out and clean your plot. That includes bordering and the first year of planting and care.
$10 per year reservation after the first year.
The plot is yours for a garden, not a deed to the legal ownership of the land. After your plot is laid out, I will post a picture for you online, as well as pics throughout the growing season. You'll need a working email address so I may contact you about your garden.

Each plot will have a simple wooden marker with your name on it if you wish. Annonymous plots are fine too (I know about nosey people, believe me). If you'd like a stone marker, get in touch and we'll discuss this. You may also send me markers, feeders, statuary and other ornaments you'd like to see in your part of the Gardens Of New Jerusalem.

If you'd like a personal garden plot in the Herb Gardens Of New Jerusalem reserved and created in your name, you may reserve your 10x10 area by sending the above listed first year's reservation to:

Todd West
6422 Hwy 140 NW
Adairsville, GA 30103
USA

Renewals are due by January 1st for each year you'd like to renew. I'll give a 10 day grace period (until January 10th), then afterwards I will either use the plot myself or allow someone else to have it. Since this is the first year I am offering to do this, if you don't renew for 2007 by January, I will leave your garden as-is after this year's plantings until summer 2007.

Anyone in the world is welcome. I do this to share the gifts of the earth with my people. I must ask that you check with me first before just showing up to work or view in person your garden out of courtesy to me and my family.

You may also contact me at 770-769-9126, yes that is snarling punk rock on the answering machine, if that offends you, don't call!

MIMOSA AND PASSION FLOWERS

I have harvested Southern Mimosa and Maypop parts......all this is fresh and is seasonal throughout mid-August.

Mimosa is an extremely intense fragrant flower, which is excellent in potpourri and incense. It has feathery spines as the flower and is also very beautiful. One of the most unique, highly scented wild tree flowers we have here. Takes a large amount to add up to any weight. Dries out well and will keep it's fragrance when crushed or burned for months after drying. As a herb, the fresh flowers are highly effective at relieving insomnia and anxiety. I have used it to increase liver function and can say it works very well. It was used in ancient times to treat individuals who had heart and respitory problems. $5 per ounce.

More info on Mimosa:

Maypop flowers (also known as passion flower) are one of the most beautiful vine originating flowers we have in Georgia. It has very vibrant crowns with a round base of purple spired pedals laced in a circular patter with various hues, rising above is a white & yellow crown. You can make delicious jams and jellies from this flower, and it is highly sought after for use in wild flower bouquets. The flowers are used in floating potpourri bowls and in ceremonial incense and offerings. Put the short stems in water and the flower will retain it's color and stay open for days. It and the fruit are a natural and effective strong anti-depressant, and has also been used by American Indians for a mild painkiller and aphrodisiac. The flower is highly sought after and used in the hair of the bride at weddings. $5 per ounce

Maypop (passion flower) fruit: Small melon shaped fruits with thick green skin and delicious jell around the seeds on the inside. It is an ancient remedy for depression and various enviromentally caused skin disorders. The skin and inner pulp are bitter, but this fruit can be cut into round cross sections and fried using the whole fruit. It is famous, as okra is, for feeding southerners immediately after the american civil war when crops in the south had been destroyed. $10 per pound
