Shrine Of The Monkey - self titled
Big feet stomping original core metal, like geezer and the fathers of heavy. Their first gigs were for Hells Angels, so they are well on their way to motherfuckers completely sacrificing themselves to this shit. Their groove is strong, lyrics exceptional. True there isn't a shred of orginality as far as the arrangements (Iommi did them all first over the years), but fuck the riffs are monsters man! This recording in straight up live, and they sound powerful, which is how I like to hear it, no overdubbing processed bs when you do this deed, three piece power trio. Hailing from England, Shrine Of The Monkey continue the solid tradition of British rock, in the working band way. Fans of stonecore and doom, you need a Shrine Of The Monkey in your collection. TREND - SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE EP
About as British as you can get, making music that defines the genre. Brooding melancholy emo kid meets soaring day tripper. The wrapping of biting distortion adds a taste of downtown to their pub harmonies. Adam Whittaking did an excellent job in Reading on the recording and mixing of this disc, it is clear almost to the point of hurting. This added tension bodes will with The Trend, who play enough scary (Blood Sweat & Tears) into the mix to let you know they would like you to believe they too, hurt. All three songs on this EP can be some sort of charter, so I'd probably keep an ear out fo The Trend. They might become something. Contact: http://www.thetrend.info, johnny@thetrend.info

GREGORY PAUL - AWAKE FROM THE FLASH
A psychedelic loop to start belies the depth of this album, though at times here be true classics, such as the shimmering Lost Diamond. Gregory Paul has mellowed it down slightly from his alternarock material with Autumndivers, he still does alot of psuedo-pop experimentation (listen to cut "A Walking Fire"), and throughout the entire album there is layered acoustica. A few spots is is strongly reminding of Radiohead, or maybe acoustic Lennon. Gregory Paul sounds best to me, when he's slightly on a tagent, and deep in space (Strychnine Blues). When he's truly creating. Some may perfer the strumming of the guitars. I prefer them jamming, Gregory Paul provides both, with a little floyd thrown in for good measure (Silly Dream). For his fifth outing, Gregory Paul is upping the grade. Contact: Online Rock Records, 2033 Ralston Ave Suite 50, Belmont, CA 94002, 650-6492304, http://www.autumndivers.com
